ONCE UPON A TIME there lived a dentist who believed in angels. Toward the end of his life, he lived in a cheery yellow gabled house deep in a forest where it almost always felt like winter, or on the verge thereof. He had a lovely and patient wife and a father's pride in his grown children. Although the dentist ran his own private practice, he also worked part of his time at an orthopædic asylum where his primary duty was to give faces to men who had lost theirs to that "late unpleasantness" which never seemed to fade despite the passing of years. He did this because he had a need to fix what was broken. Particularly, because he couldn't fix what was broken in himself.

Once upon a time an angel of mysteries and mercies took an interest in the tiny human drama of this dentist's life ~ because it stands to reason that if you believe in angels, after all, they might also believe in you.
